Today there were lots of events happening around town –
beach clean ups, a beer festival for charity, several open houses at local
businesses, and the Eagle Crest ski area had an open house with free chair lift
rides. Even though it was raining we
headed over to the ski area for a look around.
It’s a small ski area, but we’ll probably go skiing if we can this
winter – we did keep our skis. The ski
area is on Douglas Island, just across the Gastineau Channel (which at low tide
is a very wide mud flat with a very small channel of water). To get to the ski area, you have to drive
south from where we live to downtown Juneau, cross the bridge to Douglas
Island, then drive all the way up to the north end of the island almost across
from where we live, and then turn and go up into the interior of the
island. Turns out, it’s a long drive!
Since we were on the north end of Douglas we drove to the end
of the road (do you sense a theme?
There’s a lot of ‘ends of roads’ up here) and stopped for a hike. The trail was mostly boards laid through
squashy, wet ground and the boards were super slippery. But, it was very pretty and the path lead to
a small cove on the western side of the island where we saw a couple of sea
lions (or maybe seals). My camera
battery was dead, so no good picture of the sea lions.
I call this ‘spinach soup’.
Despite all the standing water, there’s not that many mosquitoes here
that we’ve noticed.
